Following Jesus When It’s Hard

October 2, 2025 0 By John Rains

In John 6:66 we read:

“As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.”

Jesus had spoken words that were hard to accept. Many who had followed Him for miracles, bread, or curiosity suddenly found the cost of discipleship too great. They left.

But Peter answered for the Twelve when Jesus asked if they would also go away:

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)

This moment captures what it really means to follow Jesus: it’s not about convenience, popularity, or even understanding everything. It’s about recognizing that only He has the life we need.

What Following Jesus Looks Like

  1. Surrender of self – We yield our own ideas of control, trusting His plan.
  2. Obedience even when costly – Not everyone applauds when we stand for Christ. Sometimes it means loneliness, ridicule, or sacrifice.
  3. Daily choice – Following Jesus is not a one-time event but a daily decision to walk in His steps (Luke 9:23).
  4. Faith when answers are unclear – Like Peter, we may not fully understand, but we know Who holds eternal life.

Encouragement for Us

  • If you ever feel like you’re walking this road almost alone — remember you are not. Christ walks ahead, and the Spirit within gives strength.
  • Others may turn back, but He sees those who stay close.
  • Our call is not to perfection, but to faithfulness.

A Simple Prayer

Lord Jesus, You have the words of eternal life.
When others walk away, help me stay near.
Give me courage when following You is hard,
and faith when I don’t understand.
I choose to walk with You today.
Amen.
