The Enduring Word of God
Matthew 24:35 – “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.”
In this powerful statement, Jesus offers us a profound promise. Everything around us, everything we can see, feel, and touch—the heavens, the earth, the kingdoms of men, the nations, and even the physical universe—all of it is temporary. It is bound by time and the limits of creation. Nothing lasts forever.
But Jesus’ words? They are eternal.
1. The Unchanging Truth of Jesus’ Words
At first glance, it might seem like a simple statement of fact. Of course, we know that the physical world is temporary. But Jesus isn’t just speaking about the inevitability of physical decay. He’s pointing to something much deeper: the unchanging nature of God’s truth.
Jesus is not just a teacher offering advice that may or may not hold up over time. He is the Word made flesh. When He speaks, He speaks eternal truth. Every word from His mouth has eternal significance because He is eternal. He is the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end (Revelation 22:13). His words are not just here to inform or instruct; they are the foundation of the universe itself.
John 1:1–3 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”
Everything in the physical world—the trees, the sky, the oceans, the stars—came into existence through Jesus’ word. When He speaks, creation obeys. And when He speaks today, His words are still full of life and power, giving us direction, purpose, and eternal hope.
2. The Eternal Relevance of His Words
Jesus said, “My words will not pass away.” This means that His teachings, His promises, His commands, and His Gospel will remain forever. They are not bound by time. They speak to us in every age, in every culture, in every circumstance.
The world around us may change. Nations rise and fall. Our lives may go through seasons of hardship, suffering, or even moments of great joy. But no matter what changes, Jesus’ words remain steadfast and unchanging.
This is not just about the written word we read in our Bibles. It is about the living Word—the Word of God that speaks to us through the Scriptures, through the Holy Spirit, and through the life of Jesus. His words continue to bring life, healing, and direction.
Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
The words He spoke 2,000 years ago still have power to speak into our lives today. Whether we’re facing a struggle or celebrating a victory, His words continue to be relevant and transformative.
3. The Word that Holds the Universe Together
Jesus’ words are not only eternal; they are also the foundation of all that exists. His words created the heavens and the earth (John 1:3). Everything that is made finds its purpose and meaning in Him.
But more than that, His words hold all things together.
Colossians 1:16-17 – “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Everything that exists in the universe is held together by Jesus’ word. The same word that said, “Let there be light,” is the same word that sustains every atom, every heartbeat, and every breath we take.
His word is not just something we read; it is alive, and it holds the universe in place.
4. The Word that Brings Life
Most importantly, Jesus’ words bring eternal life. While heaven and earth will pass away, His word brings us eternal hope, a new creation, and a living promise.
John 6:63 – “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.”
His words are not just instructions for living—they are words of eternal life. His teachings reveal the way to salvation, the path to peace, and the truth of God’s kingdom. In Him, we have life that doesn’t fade away with time or end with the passing of the physical world.
Matthew 24:35 – “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.”
His words are eternal because He is eternal. And those who hold to His words hold to a hope that will never fade.
Conclusion: Trusting the Eternal Word
Jesus’ words are eternal, unshakable, and life-giving. In a world that is constantly shifting and changing, His word remains a firm foundation on which we can stand. As we face the uncertainties of life, we can hold fast to the promise that His word will never fail. Heaven and earth may pass away, but His words will endure forever.
Are we listening to His words? Are we allowing them to shape our lives and direct our steps? In every season, His words are available to us, offering eternal truth, unending grace, and the promise of life that will never pass away.
Let us hold fast to the words of Jesus, trusting that they are life itself and will guide us into His eternal kingdom.
