When Love Won’t Let Go
Sometimes, God places someone in your life who doesn’t quite fit. They may be younger or older, loud or withdrawn, battling demons you can’t fully understand. They might swear too much, drink too much, get in trouble, or self-sabotage more than they realize. They’re rough around the edges—sometimes, sharp enough to cut you if you’re not careful.
People will tell you to give up. To walk away. To protect your peace.
But something in your spirit says: “Stay.”
Not to fix them. Not to rescue them. But to be present. To care. To love without strings.
Because you know deep down—God brought them across your path for a reason.
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:7–8
Sometimes the people who need love the most have the hardest time receiving it. They’re used to pain. It feels familiar. Safe, even. So they push you away. Or pull you close, only to push again. It’s a cycle that can wear you out if you forget that God is the one doing the deeper work.
You can’t change a person’s heart—but you can be a lighthouse. Steady. Consistent. Always pointing back to Christ.
If you’re in that place—loving someone who’s hard to love—know this:
You’re not alone. You’re not weak. You’re not naive.
You’re choosing the narrow road of grace.
And God sees it. He’s walking with you. And He’s not done writing their story—or yours.
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for trusting me with the gift of loving someone who doesn’t yet see their own worth. Give me strength when I feel discouraged. Give me wisdom when I don’t know what to say. Remind me that I’m not their Savior—You are.
Help me love like You love: patiently, faithfully, without giving up. Let my presence point them to Your grace, even if they can’t see it yet.
And while You work in their life, continue Your work in mine.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
